General Assembly

The European Commission and the Copernicus Support Office would like to invite the Copernicus Relays and the members of the Copernicus Academy to attend the second edition of the General Assembly of the Copernicus Networks.

The event will take place on 10 and 11 October 2018 at Docksdome in Brussels, back-to-back with the Copernicus Ecosystem workshop.

You, as members of the Copernicus Networks, have been actively engaging in Copernicus-activities, organising awareness-raising and skill-enhancing events as well as being dynamic local ambassadors of the Copernicus programme. To celebrate the achievements of the Networks during the past year, as well as to look into the future and further developments, we are excited to invite all representatives of the Copernicus Relays and members of the Copernicus Academy to get together to reflect, learn, network, and discover. Interactive sessions, informative workshops, presentations by high-level Copernicus team members, an information market, informal networking opportunities are just some of the activities that we have prepared for you!

The event is by invitation only and reserved to members of the Copernicus Networks and guests of the European Commission.

Opening speeches


To kick off this year's General Assembly, high-level representatives of the Copernicus programme from the European Commission will welcome you with opening speeches and will give you insights into the status and foreseen evolution of Copernicus.

  • State of the evolution of the Copernicus programme by Andreas Veispak, Head of Unit, "Space Data for Societal Challenges and Growth" Unit, DG GROW, European Commission

Annekatrien Debien and Julia Ioannou from the Copernicus Support Office will present an overview of the Copernicus Network animation. In particular, they will recap the past 12 months of activities and achievements of the Networks and describe the practical aspects related to the Copernicus Academy and Copernicus Relays: animation details, deadlines, milestones, monthly teleconferences, etc.


Presentations will also be given by Copernicus Relays and Academy members, specifically about the H2020 projects related to support to the Copernicus networks, and the Framework Partnership agreement which will make funds available for the activities or network members.


Thereafter, we will invite you to participate in interactive sessions. We will poll your opinions via an online system. Your contributions to the sessions will help refine the focus of the next day's trainings and information sessions. Your questions will receive impromptu feedback from the European Commission and the Copernicus Support Office. Finally, you will be able to learn more about your fellow Network members.

Coffee break, networking and poster session


It's time to network now! After the presentations, you will be invited for a coffee break combined with a poster session and networking opportunities. Share your ideas on future Copernicus Academy and Copernicus Relays activities, get acquainted with fellow members through their posters and develop new friendships that could lead to fruitful cooperation!

Each network member has been invited to submit a poster or bring material about their projects to ease the networking.

Visiting Brussels without having enjoyed a Belgian beer is a no-go. We will invite you for the continuation of the networking opportunities with a national cultural touch.

Right after a light breakfast, you will be invited to choose a table with a specific discussion theme. These themes have been selected with the purpose of allowing to draw conclusions that can lead to further development of the Networks. We expect the discussions to be lively and productive, therefore, there will be a coffee break in between to take time out.

We will present the results of the Splinter discussions, and we hope many surprising and promising new ideas will come out of the discussions.

Closing session


The Copernicus Support Office will wrap up the two days of the General Assembly before the European Commission draws the conclusions of the event and gives a rundown of the expectations and prospects it has vis-à-vis the Copernicus Networks.

The Docks Dome event venue is located on the roof of the Docks Bruxsel shopping district. It is easily accessible by car as well as by public transport.


     > For drivers: 1700 parking spaces are available in the basement of the building. Docks Dome is 10 minutes away from downtown Brussels. It is easily accessible with the Ring 21.

     > Public transport:

Trams 3 and 7. 

The tram 3 stops at ‘Docks Bruxsel’ (at the entrance ‘Quai des Usines/Werkhuizenkaai’).
